Thane City

History
The first
railway train ran between Thane and Mumbai on April 16, 1853.
The great
Venetian travelers Marco Polo, too, in the course of his wandering set of
foots in Thane in 1290 ad.

Lakes In Thane
Thane is
known as The City of Lakes. There are around 23 lakes in the city among
which the Talao Pali Lake and the Upvan Lake are the must to see Places.
Endowed with its beautiful Lakes and abundant greenery, the city witnessed a
spurt in property development, bringing in hordes of people into the city.
The most
important and beautiful lake of them all is the Masunda Talao, termed by
the commoner as Talao Pali . This is Lake is frequently visited by people of

the Pokharan Road area was the industrial belt of Thane, with major units

just near the Maidan is a good evening place.

around for 10-15 years and its popularity seems ever on the rise.

Gadkari
Rangayatan is a landmark in itself. Named after Ram Ganesh Gadkari, one of
the most respected literature and playwrights in Marathi Literature,
Rangayatan is a large theatre. Successful plays from all over take a long
stop here before moving on. The additional attraction of this place is the
lakeside restaurant. Tables laid out on soft green grass, the view of the
lake and the cool air around, is the perfect recipe for a lovely evening.
Cinema Halls
There’s
quiet a lot under this section, multiplex that the kanakias are putting up
on teen hath naka, and one opened at Ghodhbunder road with amenities like
Ample parking space, shopping and food mall. Makes it an amazing experience.

The Concept of Amusement Parks has found a
nice place in thane. TikujiniWadi and Suraj Water
Park lead the pack.
Shopping
A decade
backs a Thaneites shopping for a wedding or birthday meant trips to Dadar or
beyond. Today things have changed. The big brands have discovered a huge
market here and the result is a spate of outlets, big and small around key
areas like Gokhle Road, Ram Maruthi Road and Paanchpakadi. There are two
Raymond Showroom in the city, Allen Solly, Zodiac and the likes have come to
stay Provogue is the latest attraction.
Station Road
At one
point of time, Station Road was all that there was on the shopping scene. These busy stretch between the railway station passing by old TMC, the
kopeneshwar Temple and then ending into Kharkar Ali, is an interesting place. You have here rows of retail shops like Kazaree, Silk Corner Rangoli and
so on. Facing these are open stalls selling cheap footwear, cloth and all
kinds of wares. As you proceed further ahead towards the temple there is a
spate of jewelry shops one after the other. The roadside fair however
continues even here. Tucked away in this bustle is an old interesting
enterprise – vidwauns stores. They specialize in pooja Materials Sandalwood,
agarbattis, readymade Phool battis, and Lamp etc. are available here. Station
Road is as busy even now as it was before, When Gokhale Road and Ram Maruthi
Road did not even exist, as Naupada was actually a jungle where only foxes
could have shopped!
Gokhale Road
Gokhale Road boasts of some of the
biggest shopping attractions in the city. Saree shops, Footwear shops linen,
upholstery and home décor, jeweler and trinkets – its all here.
Ram Maruthi Road
In many
ways, Ram Maruti Road is the Style Avenue of Thane City. Maybe it has
something to do with its location. Whatever the reasons all the huge brands
have been unanimous in selecting it as the venue for their outlets. Allen
Solly, Zodiac, Vivaldi and others have lined up the road.
Paanchpakhadi.
Paanchpakhadi is in many ways a self-sufficient area. Besides being an
excellent residential area, in the past few years it has embraced some of
the best eateries and shopping stops.
Supermarkets
The concept
of supermarket is not exactly new. But it has taken a while to come to
thane. Lo Price, Megamarket and Apna Bazaar have already made their mark. Millenium at Paanchpakhadi and Maria are among new entries.
Education Plus
Thane and
its residents should be proud of the long legacy of learning in the city.
For some of
the oldest institution are located here. The M.H. High School has been
around for a century. Other reputed schools around the city are Bhagawati
High School, Saraswati Marathi, S.E.S., Holy Cross, T. J. High School, J. K. Vartak Nagar and A. K. Joshi.
The Vidya
Prasarak Mandal’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Set up in 1969, is
a respected institution in the city.
Dhnyansadhana College has also earned a good reputation in the past few
years. The Parshwanath College of Engineering at Vadavali, Rajiv Gandhi
Medical Collage at Kalwa, and N.K.T.Thanawala college of Law complete the
educational scenario of Thane city.
